Link: Link is our hero, who wakes up one early morning, to discover that his Uncle is going out for a midnight walk into the torrential rains. After having an odd dream about a girl named Zelda, Link decides to follow him into the castle, only to find a horrible sight!

Link's Uncle: One early morning, he travels to Hyrule Castle with little but a sword and shield, only to meet a certain fate.

Zelda: Zelda is the one who gives Link the odd dreams and pleas to him to set her free from the hands of evil that now grasp her deep within Hyrule Castle.

Village Elder: The Village Elder gives you a self-esteem boost when you visit her house, but doesn't seem to know anything about the happenings behind Hyule Castle.

Kakariko Citizens: A reward has been put out for Link's arrest and the citizens of Kakariko will do their best to fulfill it! Be careful of who you talk to, you never know who will call for the soldiers!

Sahasrahla: The wise descendent of the seven sages gives you very valuable information about where you should go first in order to stop the darkness falling over Hyrule.

The Lumberjacks: A. Bumpkin and B. Bumpkin are out cutting a tree one fine day, only to notice that a mysterious fog has fallen over the forest near their house. We meet their other brother Q. Bumpkin in the GBA version, who happens to like solving riddles!

Bug-Catching Kid: The Bug-Catching kid has gotten a cold due to the cold, evil air that is falling from Death Mountain. So when Link visits him, the child gives him a bug-catching net for catching fairies and an assortment of insects.

The Sword Smiths: One of the sword smiths have wandered into the Dark World and when Link finds him, he must search for the Megaton Hammer in order to bring him back to his home-world and reunite him with his brother. After this, they both team up and repay their thanks to Link by giving him a tempered sword!

The Scarecrow: You find this timid scarecrow in Kakariko Village and the only way to catch him is to find the Pegasus Boots!

Agahnim: This is the evil sorcerer that has stolen the maidens and Zelda! He has opened a portal to Ganon's Dark World! He works for Ganon and tries his best to stop Link from entering the Pyramid of Power!

Ganon: To Link's surprise, Ganon was really Agahnim! The final fight, in the Pyramid of Power, is intense!
